How to see which sources ChatGPT cites for your competitors

A step-by-step guide to finding the review sites, forums and articles ChatGPT and other AI engines cite when they recommend your competitors, and how to use them.

Updated · 5 min read

Why cited sources matter

AI assistants that search the web build their answers from the pages they find: review sites, forums, comparison articles and brand sites. When the same sites keep appearing next to a competitor, those sites are shaping the answer. Being mentioned there is often the fastest way into the shortlist.

Option 1: check by hand

  1. Open ChatGPT with search on and ask a buyer question, such as "best project management tool for a small agency".
  2. Open the sources panel and note every domain cited, and which brand each one supports.
  3. Repeat for Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and for 5 to 10 questions.
  4. Count which domains appear most.

This is free but slow, and answers change by engine, wording and day.

Option 2: use Top of Answer

  1. Run a free check with your buyer questions.
  2. Open Sources: the most cited sites are ranked, each marked as your site, a competitor's site or a third-party site.
  3. Open Competition to see who AI recommends instead of you and the reasons it gives.
  4. Open any question to read the full answers with their sources, and the searches AI ran in the background.

See the Sources view in the example report.

What to do with the list

  • Third-party review and comparison sites: ask to be included, with accurate product details.
  • Forums such as Reddit: join relevant discussions with useful answers and a disclosed affiliation.
  • Competitor comparison pages: publish your own fair comparison page for the same searches.
  • Your own site: answer the buyer questions clearly on one page, answer first.

FAQ

With web search on, ChatGPT usually lists the pages it used. Without search, answers come from training data and show no sources.

No. Each engine searches differently, so the cited sites overlap only partly; that is why checking several engines matters.

Often, as new pages are published and engines update. Re-checking the same questions regularly shows which sources stay important.
